Who are Les Éditions du Crieur Public?

The name of the publishing house translates as ‘the publisher of the public crier’. The public crier is a kind of forerunner of today’s journalist. He could already be found on the streets in ancient Greece, with a bell in his hand, attracting the crowd and announcing the news.

The publishing house mainly publishes the works of important French-speaking scientists, journalists or critics in the humanities, social sciences and human sciences in German and also encourages them to create new works.

By publishing the ideas, insights and opinions of these French-speaking intellectuals, a small contribution is to be made to the exchange of ideas between Germany and France. The debates and discussions held there should also be able to continue in this country.

The company was founded in the summer of 2010 in Hamburg by the journalist Yasmine Azzi-Kohlhepp, who, in the course of her teaching at the University of Hamburg, noticed that there were gaps in the German book market on certain topics, and her husband Dr Kay H. Kohlhepp, a management consultant specialising in media.

In 2020, the decision was also made to occasionally include books by German-speaking authors in the programme. One reason for this is ‘personal bias’: Kay H. Kohlhepp rediscovered the works of his grandfather Hermann E. Schütte, who was an artist in word and image as well as a merchant.

In 2023, the publishing house also began publishing books in French and English, as well as art books and novels. The art books are usually published in collaboration with the Ayn Gallery, 20, rue Saint Louis en l’Ile, 75004 Paris.
The gallery was founded by Yasmine Azzi-Kohlhepp in 2017.
